The Holdout in the Basket
Six price series stand higher than a year ago; one stands lower, and the argument of the day is which of those facts is doing the work. Consumer prices are at 332.813, up 11.38 from 321.435. Core is up 9.13 from 327.658, food up 10.41, shelter up 14.11 from 414.981, medical up 13.87, and energy up 38 from 276.558. Against all of that, used vehicles sit at 180.306, down 3.44 from 183.746.
Breadth says condition: nearly everything a household cannot defer costs more than it did. The holdout says composition may be carrying more of the headline than the headline admits, because a 38-point rise in energy can lift an index the way a single falling series cannot sink it. What today's table cannot settle is whether the split is composition or condition.
Composition requires the six climbers to be mostly one climber in a heavy coat, with the rest quieter than the total suggests. Condition requires the used vehicle decline to be the first of the six to change its mind, and nothing in the data says why a series that fell 3.44 from 183.746 would lead while shelter, up 14.11 from 414.981, follows.
Don takes the count as confirmation, and for him confirmation is reason to size up. His position spends the holdout: it must be noise, and it must stay noise. Schad takes the split itself as the signal, the line moving before the reason arrives. His position spends a mechanism, eventually, for why vehicles fell while energy added 38 from 276.558 and shelter added 14.11 from 414.981.
The test arrives with the next monthly CPI release, which reports both series on the same schedule. If that release resolves them the same way, either vehicles rejoining the climb or shelter and energy rolling toward the decline, the composition case closes. Don's concession under that outcome: six confirmations were one condition wearing six coats. Schad's under the other: a turn he saw early was one series being itself.
The basket climbed almost everywhere this year except the one place a consumer can still walk away.
